Rent Filming Locations Los Angeles: A Scout's Guide

To rent a filming location in Los Angeles, start by defining the look, the crew size and the schedule, then contact owners or location managers directly and ask for a clear written fee, insurance and parking terms. The best locations give you a distinctive look without much set dressing, room for equipment and a calm neighbourhood. Below is how we would scout, what to ask, and where our own storybook property in Valley Village fits.

What makes a great Los Angeles filming location

Producers and photographers often start with a mood board, but a good location also has to work on a practical level. A beautiful house that cannot hold your crew is not a beautiful house for your shoot. We look at six things.

  • A look that reads on camera. Distinctive architecture, mature trees, water and layered textures save you money on art direction.
  • Multiple setups in one place. Interiors, exteriors, a pool, a patio and a garden let you cover several scenes without a company move.
  • Space for the crew. You need room for equipment storage, a make-up area and somewhere for people to rest between setups.
  • Parking and access. Trucks, vans and crew cars all need somewhere to go. A quiet street is a major advantage.
  • Quiet surroundings. Traffic and aircraft noise can ruin a take. Residential cul-de-sacs help.
  • A host who understands production. Experienced owners know the rhythm of a shoot day and keep things smooth.

Different ways to find a location

Los Angeles has several routes to a location, and the right one depends on your budget and timeline.

Location agencies and libraries

Professional location libraries list many properties with photographs and contact details. They are efficient for large productions that need a lot of options quickly.

Direct from the property owner

Contacting a venue directly is often faster for smaller shoots. You deal with the person who makes decisions, and you can see photographs and ask questions the same day.

Scouting by driving and browsing

Some producers still drive neighbourhoods and look at social media for ideas. It takes time, but it can turn up places no one has listed.

Event and hospitality venues

Wedding estates, inns and event venues often double as film locations, since they were built to be photographed. Many already have parking, restrooms and space for equipment.

What to ask before you book a location

Every location has its own rules. A short conversation before you commit prevents expensive surprises on the day.

  1. What is the total fee? Ask for the rate, any overtime charges and what is included.
  2. What hours can we shoot? Residential neighbourhoods may have limits on early starts and late wraps.
  3. What are the insurance requirements? Most owners will ask for a certificate naming them.
  4. Where can the crew park? Get specifics, not general reassurance.
  5. Which areas are off limits? Know in advance which rooms and surfaces are protected.
  6. Is there somewhere for hair, make-up and storage? It makes the day far smoother.
  7. Who is on site? A host who lives at the property can answer questions in minutes.

Photographers, content creators and small crews

Not every shoot is a feature film. Photographers, brand teams and music video crews often need a location for only a few hours. For those jobs, simplicity matters more than scale: one place, a clear fee and an owner who responds quickly. If you are planning a music video, our guide to outdoor music video locations in Los Angeles goes into more detail, and our producer's scout guide to film location rental covers the process from a different angle.

Why a storybook estate works so well on camera

Many Los Angeles locations are modern and clean. A few are different: they feel like somewhere you have never been. The look of a storybook property, with brick paths, stone archways, arched wooden doors and big old trees, gives production designers a head start. A resort-style backyard adds a second world behind the first.

That variety is what keeps a location useful. A single property that can play a fairy-tale cottage in the morning and a private resort by evening saves the production time and money.

Planning your scout day

A little preparation makes a location visit far more productive. Send the owner a short brief before you arrive: what you are shooting, how many people will be on set, which areas you hope to use and which days you are considering. Bring your director of photography or whoever will make the practical call, and walk the property at the same time of day you plan to shoot, so you can see how the light moves.

During the visit, check the things photographs never show. Listen for noise from the street or the sky. Look at where power is available, where equipment will sit between setups, and how far the crew must carry gear from the parking area. Ask about restrooms and about where people can eat. Take your own photographs and short video clips so the whole team can review the options later.

Finally, put every agreement in writing: the fee, the hours, the insurance, the protected areas and the cancellation terms. A friendly location owner will welcome that clarity, because it protects them as much as you.

Where The Enchanted Manor fits

The Enchanted Manor, at 5235 Goodland Avenue in Valley Village, has a storybook front and a resort-style backyard on grounds of more than 18,000 square feet. The front has a brick path, a stone archway and large arched wooden doors. The back has a saltwater lagoon-style pool with three waterfalls, a raised Jacuzzi, a thatched gazebo bar, a lava-rock fire pit, an outdoor fireplace on a private patio, a tri-level deck and thousands of fairy lights in the trees. The pool and spa have nine light colours, which is useful when you are shooting at night.

The property has hosted a range of productions: Lifetime's "William & Kate", Bravo's "Shahs of Sunset", Jay Leno, Funny or Die, a Buick commercial, music videos, web series and cosmetic launches have all shot here. There is a make-up room and space for equipment storage. Georgia Durante, who owns the manor and lives on the property, is a former precision and stunt driver with more than thirty years of experience, so she understands how a working set runs.

The setting is quiet, a cul-de-sac with the LA River behind the house. We can fit 12 to 15 cars on the cul-de-sac plus open street parking, and the property is minutes from the 101 and 405. It is also convenient for studio work: Universal Studios Hollywood is 4.9 miles away and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour is 7.4 miles away. You can see more on our production location page.

As one guest, Andrew W., put it: "It was hard to believe it was actually Los Angeles." That is exactly the reaction a location should give you.

Staying nearby during a shoot

If your crew or talent are travelling, our Inn sits right on the property. It has a living room with a fireplace, a full kitchen and an octagonal breakfast room with French windows on every side. A private chef is available, and the Secret Room, behind a bookcase, adds extra beds. The Inn sleeps up to six guests with both the Secret Room and Great Room opened.

Enquire about your shoot

If you are scouting, we would be glad to hear about your project. Call or text Georgia at (213) 999-3050 with your dates, crew size and the kind of look you need, and we will tell you honestly whether the manor suits it. You can also look at our events page to see the grounds in celebration mode. They come as strangers and leave as friends, and that includes film crews.
